and the Alabama Department of Public Health
"Measuring and Improving Your Immunization Levels"

The Alabama Chapter-AAP Immunization Project is designed to facilitate achievement of the Year 2010 goal of 90% immunization completion levels in children two years of age. The project provides training and review of the Standards for Pediatric Immunization Practice for pediatricians and their office staff. In 1998, Alabama's immunization completion levels in the private provider sector, as measured by a birth certificate survey of 4-3-1 shot series (4 DTP, 3 Polio and 1 MMR), was 80%. These rates indicate that an immunization review is needed to build awareness among private providers about the importance of age-appropriate immunizations to the health of Alabama's infants.

To maximize the effectiveness of the Immunization Project site visit, Immunization Project RN's will provide:

  • Chart Assessments to determine immunization completion levels in your practice
  • Detailed report of findings and recommendations specific to your practice
  • CEU Program for nurses
  • VFC Program Review for VFC providers

Standards for all assessments:

  • Children 19-35 months of age are assessed for 4-3-1 completion level
  • All charts are flagged for recall if not up-to-date
  • Children seen at least twice in your practice
  • Measuring 4 DTaP, 3 Polio and 1 MMR Random sample of 60 charts for 19-35 months*

*Smaller practices will be assessed using as many charts as are available of children 12-36 months of age

The Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) and the Alabama Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AL-AAP) are working in cooperation to raise Alabama's immunization levels. The Alabama Chapter-AAP employs Registered Nurses to make appointments and conduct the site visits.
