Alabama Chapter Receives Award

Alabama was one of three chapters recognized for its accomplishments in 2002 by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Alabama was selected from among 66 chapters as the 2002 Outstanding Medium-sized Chapter. Pennsylvania and Vermont were the two other state organizations honored in the categories of large and small chapters, respectively.

Advocacy efforts by Alabama pediatricians included successful expansion of access to health insurance to over 100,000 children over the past 3 years. The chapter also conducted a statewide immunization project emphasizing compliance and proper administration of vaccines.

A comprehensive Adolescent Medicine Education Project, providing continuing education for pediatricians and pediatric office nurses, was a major chapter initiative. The chapter conducted education programs for the public and pediatricians concerning prevention of birth defects, care of children with special health needs, prevention of substance abuse, prevention of obesity, and the importance of immunizations.

Dr. Robert Beshear, Alabama Chapter President, credited the state's general pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists for volunteering many hours of hard work to improve the health and well being of all Alabama children.
